There are many species of fish that depend on the Coquitlam River including our world famous BC salmon. Coho, Chum (Dog), Spring and Sockeye Salmon have runs that start in the late summer and finish early in the winter. Unique to this river is a special sockeye that spawn in the spring but they were thought to be extinct. Through the hard work and guardianship of Kwikwetlem First Nations and its various partners this run, once called the ‘Bastard Sockeye’, is now being restored and may one day be plentiful again.
